VAN Issue Areas
For the past five years, VAN has used a menu of eight issues emerging from the Vision-West visioning process. Since then, new issues have emerged, and the eight population-focused issue areas now seem to be subsets of broader community-wide issues. The Board has therefore revised VAN’s Issue Areas to reflect these changes. VAN will prioritize work that falls within these four areas: 1. Strengthen Economic Security The number of people living in poverty is growing in Washington County, and the gap between rich and poor is widening. VAN will promote strategies that improve the health and economic well-being of individuals and families.
2. Support Diversity and Inclusion Over the past decade, Washington County has seen unprecedented growth and change in both population and diversity. We are now the most ethnically diverse county in the region. VAN will promote strategies that increase understanding, inclusion, and fair treatment for all people.
3. Build Sustainability As our population grows, we must ensure our community’s continued livability and vitality for the next generation. VAN will promote strategies that engage our community in sustainable practices.
4. Promote a Compassionate Community Washington County’s historic sense of community and caring will be challenged as we grow, age and change. VAN will promote strategies to enhance generosity, volunteerism, and service.
